At a time when she was looking for a change from English riding, Vanessa Rogers just happened to be driving by the Majestic Valley Arena in Kalispell. The large event sign on the highway said "Reining Show." Vanessa and her parents pulled in to see what it was all about. To Vanessa, it looked great: certainly not easy, but lots of fun.

It turned out that reining horse trainers Meagan Shea and Jarrod Grieve of JM Performance Horses were located near their own home. So the next spring she and her folks, Linda and Dave Rogers, stopped in at Meagan and Jarrod's for a visit.

You know the feeling, dreaming of that perfect horse. That one special horse that you love, can’t wait to ride every day and tries so hard for you. You read about folks in the Reiner that have experienced it and dream of when that special mount will come your way.

For Becky Melzer that day came at the NRHA Futurity show in Oklahoma City in 2006.

She had a lovely gelding (Bailey) by West Coast Whiz that she had been showing, but he took a long warm up. Becky has Lupus and that long warm up was wearing her out. She didn’t want to give up her favorite activity in life, reining, and felt it was time to look for a new partner.

The Random Reiner picked for this month is Anita Muri. But when you talk about Anita, you must think of Anita and her sister Janice as they have never been seen apart west of Billings. So, this article is about the two of them.

Not all of YRHA’s members are riders that show their horses. Some are family members that come to shows and support their husband, wife or children. Some are folks that have a love of horses that enjoy owning a wonderful athlete and hire a trainer to handle all the showing.

Miles City residents, Anita Muri and Janice Mostoller, are two of those YRHA members. They love horses and take great pride in seeing them become successful show horses. Anita doesn’t ride much herself, but her husband, Pete has owned horses and has ridden all of his life. Anita and Janice decided it would be a fun hobby to raise horses, purchasing their first paint mare “Easy Dice Cleggbar” in South Dakota. “Easy” was bred to “Strait from Texas”, who was a 7 time World and Reserve Champion Paint when they bought her. “Easy” had a black and white stud colt the spring of 2000. They named him “Strait N Easy”. They put “Strait” in training at Anderson Training Stables as a 2 year old and by the time he was 4 he had found his nitch as a Freestyle reiner. He won numerous Freestyle classes entertaining the crowds and his owners.

Anita and her husband, Pete, along with her sister Janice and her husband, Tom, love to travel to watch their horses show. They have sold Strait and now own a lovely sorrel Quarter Horse mare named Ju Ju Dot Chex and have already traveled as far as Denver to watch her show and win the Limited Open Futurity with trainer Ryan Anderson riding her.

Anita is a Personal Loan officer at the Stockman Bank in Miles City specializing in real estate and consumer loans. Her husband, Pete, is an insurance adjuster covering losses with the Montana Claims office. Anita and Pete have 2 grown children, a daughter, Lynnette, who works at the Yellowstone Boys and Girls Ranch in Billings and a son, Troy, who is a MT Highway patrolman, is married to Jackie and they have 2 sons, Logan and Bridger.

Be sure to help Anita and Janice cheer on “Ju Ju” at the shows this summer!

Bozeman reiner Shelle Egbert was encouraged by her trainer, Trish Purcell, to get involved in reining. At that time, she had only showed in western pleasure at some local schooling shows. So, three years ago she purchased a mare, Reys Daisy Doc, from Bill and Kelli Campbell. She started having fun and even got her daughter, Jessica, hooked on the sport. Shelle clicked with “Daisy” and earned her Green Rookie buckle in 2006.

In 2007 she qualified for the Affiliate Championships in the NRHA Rookie class riding a Peppy Badger Chex gelding, Pepn To Hollywood. She plans to show a Junior Starlight gelding next year called JR Starlight Playboy that she purchased from Paul Hesselbacher. As if that’s not enough irons in the fire, she also has a two year old gelding by Smartest Chic Olena in training with Cameron Meissner.

Shelle’s day job is doing the books for the family business, Egbert Electric and Plumbing. Her husband Phil does the plumbing side of the business that he shares with his brother. In addition to their daughter, Jessica, Shelle and Phil have a son Dan and a granddaughter, Dakota. Be sure to watch for Shelle at the 2008 shows on JR Starlight Playboy.
