Mike began his instruction discussing his warm up. He emphasized the importance of softening all the body parts. He gets them where he can bend them, side pass, work up into the bridle and counter bend. He does this at the walk every day until they are really, really broke to it. If a rider doesn't pay enough attention to the softness in their horse, it will come back to haunt them when they increase speed and difficulty.

Story & Photos by Wendy Deans

The Yellowstone Reining Horse Association held its annual awards banquet at the GranTree Inn in Bozeman January 14th. After various meetings held earlier in the afternoon, the YRHA held a social "couple of hours" as opposed to a social "hour." The Bozeman band "Jawbone Railroad" played some great music while folks visited, enjoyed hors d'oeuvres and bid on the many silent auction items available.

The folks at the GranTree serve delicious meals. We had our choice of grilled ribeye, salmon served in a puff pastry or chicken cordon blue. You couldn't go wrong!

2011 Awards Banquet and Dance-Off

The first-ever Dance-Off fundraiser was held at the annual awards banquet. Dancers were nominated for a fee and could opt out by paying a fee, but most of those nominated chose to dance. The band judged the dancers and chose the winners. Dancers had the opportunity to rock-out to the YMCA song and show off their macarena moves, too. Judging by the smiles on the contestants' faces, everyone had a good time.

A catch-ride by Jarvis Anderson on Im So Hollywood, owned by Rick and Sue Coyne highlighted the Open at Slide II while a neck-and-neck tie for first between Linda Hahn riding Jazzelan and Jackie Poole riding A Lota Moonshine in the non pro division at Slide I kept everyone in suspense throughout the big class. It's no understatement to say that the non pro classes got pretty salty this summer with veteran riders and newcomers laying down some sensational rides and keeping things interesting from the get-go. And let's not forget the green reiners and rookies - these riders all proved themselves to be formidable competitors this summer. All I can say is, look out non pros, they're coming at ya!

By Chandra Morris

Our friend, fellow reiner and YRHA board member, Pat Gervais, passed away July 21, 2011, after briefly battling a rare form of cancer. For those who knew her, it comes as no surprise to learn that Pat was a strong woman who was determined to beat the big c. With every ounce of her strength and the tremendous support of loved ones and friends, she gave it a good fight. Pat has been greatly missed at our shows this summer, and will continue to be deeply missed. Please keep her dear husband and companion in reining, Dan, in your prayers and thoughts. If you wish to send condolences, Dan’s address is: 2880 Winslow, Helena, MT 59601.

Story & Photos by Wendy Deans

Schooling a reining horse is an essential element in its training. Fortunately, for Montana reiners, Meissner Reining Horses has had three schooling shows in Manhattan this winter. Then, this past weekend, April 16th, Anderson Training Stables and Brackett Creek Quarter Horses hosted another schooling show.

There were eight classes offered, two of which included the new NRHA pattern eleven where a rider is required to trot to the middle. The turnout was excellent with eighty entries and Mother Nature blessed us with nice enough weather to make the day enjoyable. Everyone was able to ride on the outside track to practice and warm up for their class. You can classify this as a miracle considering the spring we've been having this year!
