Fellow reiners don't get to see each other much between the last shows of the summer and the annual awards banquet in January. So, we slipped in a fun event at Anderson Training Stables on October 23. The Yellowstone Reining Horse Association held their Sponsor Appreciation Day and Affiliate champion Awards along with some reining demonstrations, dog races and a yummy pot luck dinner.

We feel it's so very important to say thanks and acknowledge the people and businesses that make our shows possible. Fundraising is a challenging task for any non profit organization. For YRHA, the money that sponsors donate supports the nuts and bolts of the shows. Without those generous sponsors you can't put on a show let alone a circuit. If you enjoy showing your horse at a YRHA show please take the time to say thanks to these sponsors. If they are a business, make an effort to send your business their way.

The third and final YRHA affiliate circuit show was held August 5 - 7 at Anderson Training Stables in Wilsall, Montana. It was hard to complain about the heat we felt on Friday when the rest of the country had heat and humidity high enough to wilt the hardiest of souls.

The show went off without a hitch with everything running smooth as can be... well, almost. A wandering gopher decided to explore the show arena. Not a wise idea for a gopher when there were about twenty dogs on leashes inside. The first dog the gopher passed was only a few pounds heavier than the little rodent, a miniature longhaired dachshund. He tore away from his unsuspecting owner and the race was on. Luckily for all, this occurred on the end wall of the arena while the current rider was stopped in the middle. With half the folks rooting for the dog and the other half for the gopher, the gopher won in the end. The show went on and the little rascal found it's way back to the field.

The warmth was a welcome change at the second YRHA show held July 8 - 10. Considering hypothermia was the biggest rider concern at the first show, eighty-some degrees felt alright. Even though we had snow on the peaks earlier in the week, we felt right at home with a dry and dusty track here at the 5000’ level. Finally, summer is here!

NRHA judge, Joe Hayes, of “Gainsvull,” TX, officiated. (Yep, that’s how he pronounces "Gainesville!") The scores were consistent and he paid you for a beautiful ride. There were a number of classes won with a 72.5, one with a 73.5, but only two with a 74.

The great Flood and Mud Slide (aka Yellowstone Slide 1) was held May 27-29 with this show receiving recognition as the first YRHA show in the history of the club to be flooded out. But honestly, no one uttered a peep of complaint as it was warm and very comfortable in the indoor arena. The west end of the arena was sectioned off for a warm up area and all was well.

Not only were all the die hard reiners in attendance, but the amount of new faces that showed up to brave the weather was amazing. It appeared that nobody chose to stay in the house with their spouse this weekend, Sharon Gelhaus observed.

The Yellowstone Reining Horse Association hosted a clinic with NRHA Professional Trainer and YRHA Platinum level sponsor, Jarvis Anderson, on April 24 & 25. The clinic was held at Anderson Training Stables in Wilsall, Montana, with twelve riders attending. Jarvis split the group with six riders working in the morning and six in the afternoon to give more individual attention to each student.

Jarvis first asked each student their goals for 2010. Impressively, he never forgot each student's goals throughout the two-day clinic. He used NRHA pattern five as the base for the clinic working on the circles and turnarounds on Saturday and lead changes, run downs, stops and roll backs on Sunday. Before he began instructing, he had each student ride the part of the pattern they would be working on that day so that he could see a starting point with that rider and horse. Then he began instruction on those maneuvers.
