The great Flood and Mud Slide (aka Yellowstone Slide 1) was held May 27-29 with this show receiving recognition as the first YRHA show in the history of the club to be flooded out. But honestly, no one uttered a peep of complaint as it was warm and very comfortable in the indoor arena. The west end of the arena was sectioned off for a warm up area and all was well.

Not only were all the die hard reiners in attendance, but the amount of new faces that showed up to brave the weather was amazing. It appeared that nobody chose to stay in the house with their spouse this weekend, Sharon Gelhaus observed.

To say that the horses and riders stepped it up over the course of the season from YS I to YS III is almost an understatement. By the third show, three-year-olds were showing some maturity in the show pen, rookies were stepping up their performances, and the non pros were resetting the bar higher and higher.

Judged by Paige Stroud (Snohomish, WA) and Dan Mayer (Axtell, UT), YS II was an affiliate qualifying show for the YRHA, Montana Reining Horse Association and Cowboy States Reining Horse Association. All three clubs converged for some friendly rivalry (and a little revelry) around the show pen.

Summer-like weather graced the three-day event put on by the Yellowstone Reining Horse Association, which started Thursday May 28 with a full slate of club classes followed by two days of NRHA and Ancillary classes. Judge Richard Pokluda of Whitesboro, Tex., presided over the event and riders from Montana, Wyoming, Idaho and the Dakotas strutted their stuff for a chance to win prizes, cash and bronzes – and to stake their claim to places in the standings for the Intermountain Regional Affiliate finals at summer’s end. More than 350 entries kept the judge, scribes and Show Secretary busy.

It was a bit hot on Thursday during the club classes and a tad breezy as a front was trying to move through the area. The cool-down that it brought even gave us a little frost on the lawn chairs in the morning. We’re all pretty broke to the weather though and no one comes to these shows without a heavy jacket in addition to sleeveless shirts and gallons of water.
